Fern Carpeted Forests

Greetings from the Rivers Edge campsite outside Adelaide, PA. Yesterday we entered our 5th and last state -PA- of this tour as we passed over the Mason Dixon line just past the eastern continental divide. It has been a glorious two days on the Allegheny trail, the nicest surface and most amazing scenery. After having a delicious breakfast at Teddy and Franks, we went to the canal museum in Cumberland. Leaving Cumberland was a 23 mile incline- I don't mean up and down, I mean incline the whole way. The reward for this climb is that the rest of the way is a slight decline into Pittsburgh.

At the beginning of the trail we were alongside the railroad and then proceeded through several tunnels- including the 2/3 mile Savage tunnel. The bridges and tunnels are part of what make this trail so incredible, in addition to the forests that have changed as we've moved west. The last leg of our trip we were flanked by fern carpeted forests and the Youghogheny River. At times in feels as if we are far from civilization and at other times we hear the train whistle and see coal carrying trains next to us.

The trail goes in and out of old towns that were once boom railroad and coal towns. Today most of them are struggling, but the trail- finished just a couple of years ago- is bringing new life to gritty, formally industrial areas that previously rarely saw a bicycle or people in nylon pants.

It is off to our tent to bed for the last night of this tour.
